Bakery
One of the things that make Shetland distinctive is the network of local independent bakeries that serve the islands. In an age when some communities elsewhere rely on bread baked by large companies hundreds of miles away, it’s a matter of pride that, in Shetland, small craft bakeries serving their local district are still very much part of the scene. However, bread – in many varieties - is only one of their products.
There are traditional Shetland items like bannocks and local biscuits. Several kinds of oatcake are available too. At the sweeter end of the taste spectrum, there’s a great variety of scones and cakes. Local bakeries also supply filled rolls, sandwiches and hot snacks.
