Shetland Fruit and VegetablesVegetables & Fruit

Outside the islands, the vegetable for which Shetland is best known is the Shetland Black tattie. In recent years, it has benefited from the same revival in interest in all kinds of heritage crops that has seen the return of other ancient potato varieties and almost-forgotten kinds of apples or pears.

The Shetland Black is alive and flourishing in its homeland but is, of course, only one of many kinds of vegetable available from growers in the islands. As well as other kinds of potato, turnips, carrots, cabbage and kale have been produced for generations. Today, however, it’s also possible to buy locally-raised salad leaves, onions, herbs, mushrooms and soft fruit. Some of the production is organic.
