Programme unveiled for Flavour of Shetland

Shetland Islands Council has announced the dates for this year’s Flavour of Shetland festival, now a firm favourite on the islands’ event calendar. From 25 to 28 June, locals and visitors can enjoy a full and varied programme of activities on Victoria Pier, which are set to celebrate the very best of Shetland’s food, music, crafts and culture.

Working hard behind the scenes, project co-ordinator Nicola Halcrow gives a flavour of what to expect. She said: “The music programme is shapely up nicely and we’re delighted by the response from bands and artists keen to participate. We’re in the process of finalising the schedule so look out for confirmation of the headline acts in the near future.

“We’re also very fortunate to have Margaret Stuart join the celebrations. Margaret, who published a facsimile of her mother’s traditional Shetland cookery book ‘Cookery for Northern Wives’ – originally published in 1925, will be demonstrating a few recipes from the book, including bannock making. Anyone interested in these traditional recipes can purchase the book at the festival and there will also be a display of cookery-related old Shetland photographs, clothing and artefacts to add to the atmosphere.

“As in previous years, there will be a food court of stalls where festival goers can taste a flavour of Shetland. Local chef Glynn Wright will be heading up a special seafood stall, working alongside mussel growers, Demlane and North Atlantic Shellfish.

“We’ll also have our craft market and this year 15 high quality craftspeople have signed up to participate including two brand new producers.

“The event would not be complete without some good old-fashioned folklore and we welcome back Davy Cooper to regale with stories of Norse sagas linking in with the Viking theme chosen for this year’s Johnsmas Foy.

“We’re confident that this year’s Flavour of Shetland not only promises to deliver in terms of a great day out, but also serves to highlight the very special attributes of Shetland that are right on our doorstep.”
